‘The outstanding applicant’ delights chairman Smith

CHAIRMAN Len Smith said Tommy Widdrington was the ‘outstanding applicant’ as he introduced his new manager on Thursday morning.

Widdrington, 40, signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Boro’ and was due to take his first training session and meet the players last night (Thursday).

Smith and the Boro’ committee said they received a number of impressive CVs but they believe Widdrington is the right man to arrest their slide down the Blue Square South table.

The boss, who left Evo-Stik League Southern - Premier Division outfit Hemel Hempstead FC to take the position at Boro’, has previously managed Salisbury and worked under Paul Sturrock at League Two table toppers Southend United.

Widdrington will divide his time working as a scout for a Football League club and managing Eastbourne Borough. He will be joined by former Wimbledon player Alan Kimble.

Chairman Len Smith said, “He stood out from the rest and we feel his is the right man to take this club forward at this time.

“He was with Salisbury a number of years and did a very impressive job there. We feel as though he wants to be part of the progress here. We didn’t want someone who will just be here for the short-term.”
