Safety almost certain
ahead of Basingstoke

Safety is in sight for Eastbourne Borough as they could mathematically secure their survival in the Blue Square South this weekend.
Things have gone Eastbourne’s way during the week, with Hampton and Richmond Borough losing one of their games in hand and Farnborough being docked five points to move below the Sports in the table.
Eastbourne only have to equal Havant and Waterlooville’s result or better Hampton and Richmond’s in order to guarantee their place in the league next season.
Even if they fail to do that, the five teams below Borough would all have to pick up points in order to overtake Borough in 15th place.
It means things are looking pretty good for Tommy Widdrington’s men, who will still be required to hold their nerve when they travel to Basingstoke this weekend.
Widdrington said, “Results could go our way again this weekend which means we wouldn’t need any points to secure survival but we will still be going out with the aim to win every match.
“We haven’t relied on anybody else to get us where we are now and that’s the way it’ll continue.
“This is a 42 game season and we still need to treat the 41st and 42nd games the same way we have every other one. We can’t stop now.”
Basingstoke are still in with a chance of sneaking into a play-off spot and so will provide a tough challenge for an Eastbourne Borough side lifted by a victory over Hampton and Richmond Borough last weekend.
Widdrington said, “I went to watch Basingstoke on Monday night and you can see why they are where they are.
“They remind me of Dartford in that they are a very strong and drilled side with very big lads.
“They held their shape well and will be a tough nut to crack.”
With one eye on next season, Widdrington said, “I’ve been watching the players from day one and they’ve had plenty of time to impress me.
“Once we get over the line I will, in due time, make my feelings known of what players I want for next season.
“Some players may not have been featuring that much this season whether that be through age or lack of experience but that’s not to say they won’t be in my plans for the future.
“It may just be the case that I’m happy with the performances from the players that are playing in their position for the time being.
“It will be a new season, a new start and there will be some new faces but there are plenty of well-liked players here that hopefully will want to stay with us.”
Widdrington is also keeping tabs on the reserve squad after attending their Challenge Shield semi-final clash with Metropolitan Police on Wednesday night.
