No rest for the Borough boys

In a bid to build momentum and match fitness, Eastbourne Borough boss Tommy Widdrington has denied his players a rest this weekend and organised a friendly with Farnborough instead.

Defeat to King’s Lynn in the FA Trophy earlier this month meant the Sports were preparing for a free weekend as most other teams in the Blue Square Bet would be playing in the competition on Saturday.

However, after a displeasing second-half performance from his men in their 1-0 Sussex Senior Cup victory over Horsham on Tuesday night, Widdrington has organised a match to keep the ball rolling and get some more practice under their belts before they return to domestic duty in December.

He said, “We won’t be having a break this weekend, I’ll be taking them to Farnborough instead.

“I felt our second-half performance was a bit flat and, with all due respect to Horsham, we should be beating these teams by three, four or five goals.

“We want to keep the momentum going after two wins on the trot.

“We’ll go there aiming to get some practice and make the necessary improvements.”

An additional reason for wanting to play this weekend is to help get a handful of Borough players back to full match fitness after a spate of injuries.

Widdrington added, “Five of my 11 players took the field still lacking match fitness.

“Charlie Gorman got another 90 minutes under his belt, which is pleasing, and Elliott Charles and Kezie Ibe stayed on the field on Tuesday for longer than they did on Saturday, which is good progress.

“The only way to get match fit is to play matches so that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
