Negative atmosphere shackles the players

Eastbourne Borough boss Tommy Widdrington is hopeful his men can pick up their first win in five when they free themselves from the ‘shackles’ of playing at home this weekend.

The Sports’ defeat to Bath on Tuesday night ensured they haven’t won a league match at Priory Lane since December, 8 which, according to the Borough boss, is partly down to the pressure that comes with playing in front of a home crowd.

Widdrington said, “When we’re on a run like we are at the moment, confidence can be lost very quickly.

“We started brightly on Tuesday but when you miss a couple of chances, that confidence is gone.

“In general, I feel there was a negative feeling around the ground on Tuesday but it’s a double-edged sword because although I can understand their frustrations, they come to support their club.”

This weekend, Borough travel to Farnborough in the first of three successive away games that Widdrington hopes will give his men the chance to get back on the winning wagon.

“We’ll be going there without the shackles of the lack of confidence that comes with playing at home and hopefully we can get another good away result.

“Farnborough are a side that probably think if they can string a couple of results together, they’re in the promotion chase.

“They’ve been beating some good sides lately and, with no disrespect, that might allow a bit of complacency into their game. We need to stand up and be counted, though.

“The players need to demand more from each other but I can assure fans, every single one of them go out there wanting what’s best for Eastbourne Borough Football Club.”

Widdrington is still expecting to be without Chris Shephard, Adam Watts and Elliott Charles for their trip to Farnborough.

Widdrington added, “Elliott started the Bath game even though he wasn’t 100 per cent. Fair play to the lad for giving it a go but he needed to come off and it seems he may be out for a little while now.”
