More of the same for New Year’s Day clash

Eastbourne Borough boss Tommy Widdrington said he will be expecting more of the same as he prepares his side for the second of their festive fixtures against Havant and Waterlooville.

In horrendous Boxing conditions at Priory Lane last week, it was Blue Square South strugglers Havant who triumphed 1-0.

Both sides battled extremely hard in driving wind and rain but it was Lee Bradbury’s men who stole all three points thanks to a first half penalty.

Widdrington’s men will travel west across the south coast on New Year’s Day and are prepared to slug it once more on a heavy pitch.

Widdrington said, “The forecast suggests conditions will be similar and hopefully this time the result will go our way.

“Their pitch will not be any better than ours was and sometimes at this time of year you have to accept that.

“Obviously you want to play the best possible football and on Boxing Day, to our credit, we tried that.

“But we know conditions can sometimes dictate how to play and if that’s the case we have to be ready for the that.”

A huge piece of good news for the Borough faithful was the return of Antigua and Barbuda international striker James Walker.

Walker came off the bench on Boxing Day and completed 30 minutes of football on a heavy Priory Lane pitch.

Walker has not played competitive football since he injured his knee in a World Cup qualifier against Guatemala October.

Fans will hope his return can help Borough hit the goals as they attempt to make the play-offs in 2013.

Borough are 11th in the table on 24 points from 20 matches. Widdrington’s former club Sailsbury are top on 42 points from 19 matches.
