Lack of security prompted Elphick move to Eastleigh

Former Eastbourne Borough defender Gary Elphick has revealed his disappointment at leaving the club and insists the only reason behind it was a ‘lack of security’.

The injury-prone defender could not be reassured by Eastbourne Borough that his place at the club was safe and completed the move to Eastleigh for peace of mind.

“Eastleigh could offer me the security I need. I got a mortgage to pay, same as everyone else, and Borough couldn’t guarantee that I would play.

“I am happy with the move as it gives me a year and a half with peace of mind, but it was gutting to leave Eastbourne as I’m still very fond of the club and all the players there.

“At the end of the day, Eastbourne Borough needed the money too. It was in the interests of both parties to accept the transfer.” Elphick completed his move to fellow Blue Square South outfit Eastleigh on 20 January after nearly three years with Eastbourne Borough. Despite his time being marred with persistent calf and hamstring injuries, Elphick insists he will look back with fond memories.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time and I think I’ve been playing some of my best football this season.

“Last year was a bit of a nightmare for me because of injury but I’ve still averaged about 30 games a season, which isn’t bad. A lot of the time I would play through injury, which was probably a bit stupid of me, but I would do anything for that club.” Looking ahead to his time at Eastleigh, who currently sit six places and five points above Eastbourne in the table, Elphick is fully fit and looking for his first start in their match against Sutton United on Saturday.

“I’m just getting to know all the players at the moment but hopefully I’ll put a thought in the manager’s mind once I start training. You can tell walking into the dressing room there’s more confidence here than at Borough and I’m hoping to really kick on and start enjoying my football.”
