Walker opts for Dover
Mitchell Walker in goal for Eastbourne Borough v Welling
Eastbourne Borough’s Head Coach Alan Kimble hopes the club are able to compete financially when it comes to bringing new faces to Priory Lane.
The Sports just missed out on the acquisition of Mitchell Walker this week, despite him enjoying a promising loan spell in the squad at the tail end of last season.
He instead went to fellow Blue Square Bet South side Dover Athletic, who finished eleven places above Borough in the table.
Kimble said, “We put in an offer for him but, unfortunately, Dover came in with a higher one.
“It wasn’t just Dover after him though, there were league clubs and some others too. At the end of the day, he was looking after himself and we can’t have any qualms about that.
“I just hope that we can compete financially with the other teams in this league.
Mitch may have seen Dover as a better club than us but hopefully other players may feel differently.”
Alan and Tommy Widdrington have already made way for some new summer signings after parting ways with seven players from last year’s squad.
Gary Charman, Billy Medlock, Ross Treleaven, Steve Brinkhurst and Rikki Banks were the latest names to join Matt Crabb and Matt Smart out the Priory Lane exit door.
While the management duo have yet to announce any additions to the team, they are working tirelessly behind the scenes to do so.
“We have a clean slate now and we’ve identified what we need to add to the squad, what we’re looking to bring in. We need some new blood who will blend in with the experience and the youth that we already have here.
“We need more winners, more leaders and that will come with new faces. This club needed a revamp and this is the start of a new era.
“Tommy and I are on the phone 24-7 trying to bring in new people and hopefully that will start being the case soon.”
Widdrington brought former Wimbledon defender Kimble with him to Eastbourne Borough from Hemel Hempstead in early February.
Since then, the pair have managed to secure the club’s BSBSouth status and Kimble believes they can build on that next season.
“We knew when we came in we had to turn things around quickly because the team were on a slip, slide slope. We brought our own ideas in and managed to secure survival with flying colours.
“It was all about bringing the confidence back into the guys. They don’t become bad footballers overnight.
“They massively underachieved last season but we’ve come in and stamped our authority on the club. We’ll continue to run this club as professionally as possible, as we have done from day one.
“We’ll have a long, hard pre-season and hopefully we can really push on this year and look forward rather than behind.”
