Borough avoid drop despite Basingstoke defeat
Tommy Widdrington
Eastbourne Borough suffered a 3-0 defeat at play-off chasing Basingstoke in their penultimate game of the season.
After last week’s 2-0 victory against Hampton and Richmond, coupled with defeats for relegation rivals, Blue Square South safety was already virtually assured for Tommy Widdrington’s side.
And despite today’s defeat other results went Boro’s way and guaranteed they avoid relegation.
Widdrington’s men were determined however to get another three points on the board and despite the unflattering scoreline competed well for long periods.
They were caught out on 11 minutes when Sam-Yorke opened the scoring for the home side. They then conceded two quick goals on 58 and 59 minutes through Daley and McAuley respectively.
Boro’ battled gamely but struggled to carve out clear cut chances. Substitute Ellis Remy came the closest to scoring but was unable to capitalise on two half-chances following his second half introduction.
Boro’s last game of the season is against Salisbury next Saturday.
The 3-0 victory lifted Basingstoke into sixth place with Boro’ dropping down two places to 17th.
Boro starting XI: Walker, Cole, Baker, Rowe, Crabb, Johnson, Smart, Anderson, Hamilton-Omole, Hart, Watson.
