Eastbourne Borough veteran defender Darren Baker has signed on for his 20th season with the club.

Baker, who has made an incredible 949 appearances for the Sports, agreed the deal with manager Tommy Widdrington on Tuesday.

Widdrington said, “I am delighted that ‘Bakes’ has agreed to be part of what we are going to do next season.

“When Alan and I arrived we said that everyone would have their chance and Darren has grabbed his with both hands.

“His fitness and technical performances have been first rate and he has adapted to our methods like a true professional.

“We are aware of his history and long association with the club but there is absolutely no sentiment in this decision at all.

“That would not be appropriate for the player or the club. This decision is based purely on his ability, professionalism, and what he can bring to the squad.”

Meanwhile long-serving players Matt Crabb and Matt Smart have been released.

Crabb joined Borough in 2000 and made more than 500 appearances.

While Matt Smart, signed from Horsham, and represented the club on more than 450 occasions.

Widdrington added, “Both Alan (Kimble) and I thank both for their contribution during our time.

“They certainly played their part and that, quite rightly, both lads will live a very long time in the hearts of all Boro’ fans for their long and successful careers at Priory Lane.”
