Defeat increases drop fear for Polegate cricketers

Mayfield I - 264 for 4 dec

Polegate & StoneCross I - 161

Polegate’s Division Six relegation fears have deepened after runaway league leaders Mayfield cruised to a resounding victory in their one-sided affair.

Polegate won the toss and inserted Mayfield to bat first, with Jason Finch leading a blazing assault on the Polegate attack with a monstrously quick 120, including 17 fours and three sixes.

After just 39 overs and with the score on 264-4, Mayfield felt they had a comfortable lead and declared. Nigel Johnson, Stuart Conroy and debutant Siraj Mashood were the other wicket takers.

In reply Polegate started well. Siraj Mashood played a few classic straight drives before being caught and bowled for 35 by Andy Parker.

Fellow opener, Nick Corbett was again looking in fine fettle before missing a straight one, also from Parker, and departing for 29. Mayfield Skipper, Rajesh Sharma went through the majority of the Polegate side picking up superb figures of 7 for 30.

With Dicker picking up an astonishing nine-man win at Newhaven, Polegate were left 15 points adrift of safety at the end of the day and now face a tough six match run in to ensure that Division Three Cricket remains at The Polegate Memorial Ground next season.

That run in starts at home in a crucial match against fellow strugglers Ditchling this weekend.

Forest Row 116 all out

Polegate & Stone Cross 118-3

Andy Johnson recorded his second half century in as many games to help ease Polegate and Stone Cross seconds to a comfortable victory over Forest Row.

Polegate had limited Forest Row’s run total with some clinical bowling, none more so than from Marc Small who achieved astounding figures of 6-12 from nine overs as Forest Row finished on 116 all out.

Up until Marc’s introduction, bowling had been slow, with only Baba Saracouli providing any pace in a tidy 11 over spell for just 14 runs.

Three other spinners were tried, including 13-year-old Nathan Hover (2-33), before Marc entered the attack.

In reply, Polegate batted steadily after losing the early wicket of Hover. Veterans Johnson and Alan Williams saw the score to 78 before the next wicket fell – that of Williams for 27.

Clive Harris then entered the fray and bludgeoned several boundaries to see the hosts home with seven wickets and 14 overs to spare.

Polegate and Stone Cross collected 30 points and Forest Row just three.
