Davidson: Why I stayed at Town

Eastbourne Town player of the year Adam Davidson admitted he was tempted by a move to Worthing but is delighted to be staying at the Saffrons.

The 27-year-old Town midfielder, who has been a regular under manager Ady Colwell for the past three seasons, looked to be heading for the exit door after an approach from Ryman Division One South rivals Worthing.

Ex-Boro coach Simon Colbran made his move for Davidson and fellow Town midfielder Luke Denton, who also rejected the move, days after taking over the managerial reins from Danny Bloor.

Davidson said, "I spoke to Worthing and I was tempted. They are a good club and made it clear that they wanted myself and Luke.

"It looked like I was going to sign but I went away on holiday and looked at things differently. There is something special about playing for your home town club and at the end of the day I did not want to give that up.

"It is a great set-up at the Saffrons. The team spirit is fantastic and we have one of the best managers around.

"I believe we can progress further. We had a great season last year but none of the players want to settle for that.

"We believe we can get to the play-offs this year and that is our aim. We know what this league is about. We have gained the experience and if we can add a couple more faces then I'm sure we can push on."

One of the new faces coming in could mean a return for former Town hitman Liam Baitup. The temperamental striker moved to Met Police last season after breaking disciplinary rules.

Boss Colwell said, "We have not ruled out the possibility. I have always liked Liam and we are the club who has always got the best from him.

"He is still at Met Police but you never know what can happen."

Midfield hardman Greg Manton has joined his brother Brad at Eastbourne United but the rest of the Town squad have re-signed.

There could also be returns for pacey winger Mark Goodwin and ex-Spurs and Brighton player John Piercy.
