United travel to the Beaconsfield motivated by pride

Eastbourne United manager Paul Daubeney admits he is looking forward to the end of a turbulent season, but he won’t be taking Monday’s local derby lightly.

United travel to face Hailsham Town at the Beaconsfield (11am) with pride their main motivation.

Daubeney’s men are certain to finish bottom of the Sussex County League division one, meaning this will be their last derby for at least a season.

“It is going to be hard,” the manager said, “Hailsham have had some up and down results but they have still got a good side. It will depend on who we have got.

“Hopefully we can get through Saturday’s game at Lingfield, which will probably be hard and physical, then go out and enjoy it.

“It is just a matter of getting the season out of the way.”

United’s relegation was confirmed weeks ago but they have been fighting a losing battle almost since day one, with much of the club’s focus on renovating the Oval.

Now Daubeney is looking to next year in division two and he hopes to attract players with a similar long-term view.

He said, “We want people that just want to play for us, hopefully they can see the bigger picture.”

Hailsham boss Kenny McCreadie shares his counterpart’s opinions.

He is willing the season to end; Monday’s clash is the Stringers’ final match of a topsy-turvy campaign. Before that they host Selsey on Saturday.

“I am quite glad it is over,” said McCreadie, “We have lost a couple of players and now we’re struggling. We have a tough game on Saturday and the derby will be tougher.”

Hailsham 1, Ringmer 2

Shane Saunders scored the only goal as Hailsham suffered a 2-1 home defeat against near-rivals Ringmer on Tuesday night. Adam Mitchell and Marc Whiteman were on target for the visitors.
