Top-of-the-table clashes will shape United’s year

The two top-scoring teams in Sussex County League Division Two will go head-to-head this weekend as Eastbourne United travel to Little Common on Saturday.
While United have been running riot in the League, averaging just under five goals per game over the last three months, their opponents are equally as free-scoring, hitting Saltdean for eight unanswered goals at the weekend.
Paul Daubeney’s men themselves triumphed by a 7-1 score line over Oakwood at the Oval last Saturday to extend their unbeaten run to eight domestic contests and see Liam Baitup, who notched a hat-trick last weekend, head the League’s top-scorer table with 19 so far this term.
Daubeney said, “We didn’t start very well and the first half was very similar to the last time we played them, which was scrappy and the quality of football wasn’t good.
“After a chat at half time, we came out firing on all cylinders and I wanted the match to carry on going after 90 minutes. it was that good to watch.
“There is a point where you’re waiting and worrying that you won’t turn it around, but you have to have faith in the guys.”
Daubeney knows the Christmas period will be tough as they face Little Common, Westfield and Bexhill, who are all in the top seven of the table, but believes it will also be a crucial fortnight.
He added, “We tend to raise our game against the top teams and I hope that’s the case again. If we get nine points from those three games, we’ll be in very good shape indeed.”
