The weight is off the players’ shoulders - Daubeney

After a particularly tough few weeks for Eastbourne United AFC, manager Paul Daubeney is trying to remain positive before his team’s clash with East Grinstead on Tuesday evening.

A 5-0 defeat at the hands of mid-table Ringmer this week followed on from similarly heavy losses against Crawley Down and next Tuesday’s opponents East Grinstead, piling on the misery for the already-relegated United.

Despite the doom and gloom though, Daubeney is determined not to let his players feel sorry for themselves.

He said, “We don’t want to simply go through the motions between now and the end of the season. While we didn’t play well against Ringmer, it was individual errors and some dodgy refereeing that has really cost us.

“The players just have to enjoy themselves. The weight is off their shoulders now and they can play their football with freedom.”

Having come up against the Wasps only a month ago, Daubeney believes his side are more than capable of winning.

“On paper they should beat us, but in our last game against them we could have been 3-1 up at half time.

“Their manager even came up to me and asked how we’re bottom of the league! With our best team out and the right attitude, we’ve got a great chance of causing an upset.”

United will be boosted by the return from injury of Nick Chamberlain and Olly Lee, with Jamie Andrews also expected to continue his comeback.
