A goal from Gianlucca Del Guadio was enough to seal victory for Eastbourne United on Easter Monday derby Day at the Oval.

United fully deserved the victory on a wind and rain swept morning against a Hailsham side that never displayed their promotion winning form.

Paul Daubeney’s side were on top throughout the first half with early chances for Peter Cooper and Liam Baitup.

Hailsham rarely had a sniff of goal and when they did they lost their top scorer Danny Leach. The striker chased down a long through ball and collided with keeper Adam Sargent. Leach required treatment and bravely battled on for the remainder of the first half but didn’t appear after the interval.

Before the break United took the lead from a fine flowing move. Simon Catt cut in from the left, teed-up Del Gaudio and the former Hailsham player expertly guided the ball home from 18 yards. Kenny McCreadie was furious with his lacklustre men but they did little better in the second.

United should have extended their lead but Cooper and Baitup both missed golden chances.

Hailsham’s best chance came with 10 minutes to go when Jamie Salvidge was through on goal but Shaun Lee’s last ditch challenge prevented the striker from getting his shot away.
