Commitment delights new rugby director

Fitness testing has never been high on the priorities for rugby players but the new commitment to ensure Eastbourne are the best prepared rugby club for the new season saw this record attendance.

The touch tournament was dominated by club captain Matt Pysden's "heavy team", while Paul Keen showed that scoring tries is his speciality as he top-scored with seven and still just managed to pip his younger brother Jamie in the sprints.

As well as Tuesdays at the club, training will take place at Whitebread Hollow (7pm) on Thursdays for July. New strength training is arranged for Wednesdays and ergo training takes place on Mondays. Contact Director of Rugby Nigel Gossedge, pictured above, on 07515 431179 for more details.

The rugby club's AGM opened with chairman Peter Bailey reviewing the past season.

Despite the first XV having a disappointing campaign, in other areas there were good signs, including the third XV gaining promotion.

The seconds reached a cup final and the colts had a good run in the County Shield, while the minis and juniors were thriving. What's more, a Women's XV had been formed and fixtures are being arranged for them for the coming season. Head coach Rick Walshaw and club captain Pysden retain their appointments.

Club stalwarts Bob Dunbavin and Kevin Smith stepped down from their posts as president and first XV forwards' coach respectively, and were presented with the well deserved prestigious RFU Special Volunteers certificates.

The four Board directors, Peter Bailey, Paul Feist, Hugh Graham and David Jenkins were re-elected, as was the bulk of the management committee. Peter Lloyd was elected president, the culmination of 34 years' service to the club.

Despite increased expenditure on improved security for the club premises, the club is in a sound financial position. Commercial Director Paul Feist also outlined the project to install new floodlights.
