Chairman Fletch: there’s no relegation hangover at the club

Chairman Ian Fletcher-Price insists there will be no relegation hangover when the action gets underway at Findon Cricket Club tomorrow.

Eastbourne dropped from the Premier League last season after an inconsistent campaign in 2012.

But the chairman believes the club has regrouped and relegation actually forced them revaluate their strategy.

“We have always been a close knit club and what happened last year was a wake-up call for us all. We know what we are doing well but there were certain parts that needed to improve in order to make us successful in the long-term.

“Our focus will return to where it should have been all the time and that is developing young talent.

“We want to see the next Mark Tomsetts, the next Ollie Rayners and the Ben Browns coming through. We learnt a few lessons last season and we certainly will not be going down the route of bring players in and paying them expenses and all that nonsense.

“Of course we want to be successful but first and foremost we are a club for the community and we don’t want to lose that.”

Of this season, Fletch added, “We believe we have pieced a very good side together. We have a good mix of youth with a bit of experience. In Mark Tomsett we have a fine captain who was the top-scorer in the Premier League. I’m sure he and the other senior members of the side will be a huge help to the youngsters.”

Mark Tomsett will be captain and first team coach this season and former Sussex star Neil Lenham has been drafted in as director of cricket.

“We are immensely lucky to have someone of Neil’s pedigree with the club. It’s brilliant for us.”
