Poyet gets wrong end of Seagulls stick

Albion manager Gus has slammed the Brighton boo boys – but seems to have got the wrong end of the stick.

Poyet hit out at supporters who booed as the Seagulls left the field at half time during this week’s 2v2 draw with Watford.

Speaking in the press this week he said fans were here to support the players and should refrain from letting their feelings known in such a vocal way.

And he also criticised the way some fans in the North Stand applauded debut goalie David Gonzalez for catching the ball shortly after he left a poor free kick beat him.

“Normally they [the fans] are unbelievable but that I’m not going to accept,” he said. “They are here to support our players.

“And then the booing at half-time. I don’t like it because they are being unfair to an unbelievable group of players who are bringing plenty of joy to this football club and attacking any single person is attacking the whole club.”

However, his comments have baffled fans who say they were directing their angst at the game’s referee – not Poyet’s team – after the man in the middle failed to send off a Watford player who appeared to strike Ashley Barnes in the face and then awarded a first half penalty against the Albion.

Criticism of the team was also largely absent during the Albion’s 6v0 humiliation at the hands of West Ham last Saturday, with no more than a few unhappy individuals giving players any stick during what was the team’s heaviest defeat of the season.

In fact, the majority of the club’s 3,000 travelling fans stayed behind to clap the team off after what has been a superb first season back in the second tier for the Seagulls.
