Champions honoured after feast of indoor bowls action
Eastbourne Indoor Bowls Club members were treated to a feast of bowls when all the club finals were played off.
Past Ladies champion Sue Taylor played Rosemary Burgin in the Ladies Singles Final.
The first 10 ends were evenly contested with Sue leading by seven shots to six. At this point Sue started on a brilliant run to take the title 21-7.
The Ladies Pairs final was between Sue Taylor and Pat Bain who played Judy White and Anne Summers. Sue and Pat played steadily to lead 11-3 after 10 ends and were leading 16-6 after 15. Scoring four shots on the 17th and 18th ends, Sue and Pat secured a fine win 24-7.
Jean Baulcombe, Mo Young and Pat Bain staged a terrific fight back in the Ladies Triples when they played Pat White, Judy White and Anne Summers.
Anne’s trio had gained a good lead after 10 ends 9-4 then Pat’s team started to fight back scoring 3,2 to level. Anne’s ladies then rallied themselves, scoring 4,1 to lead 14-9. Pat’s ladies then turned on the style to win an exiting game 17-14. In a new format this year the Ladies had a drawn fours competition.
The Final was between Pauline Davies, Anne Jobbins, Beth Clarke and Sheila Simmons who played Maureen Stanbridge, Jean Hampson, Barbara Archer and Ursular Fenner. The first 10 ends saw Sheila’s team draw ahead 11-6 and finish much the stronger side. Sheila’s Ladies ran out fine winners 21-10.
The last of the ladies games was the Ralph Endeavour Pairs. This year’s finalists were Daphne Buxton and Gill Henty who played Sharon Searle and Wendy Hylands. Daphne and Gill played steadily throughout running out the winners 27-11.
Two past Champions contested the Men’s Singles Final when John Pannett played Peter Reynolds. Peter, who is a Founder Member, has been champion no fewer than five times over the clubs 33 years history.
John, who was in fine form over the weekend, led 10-5 after 10 ends and 16-12 after 20 ends. After an excellent game, which was a credit to both players, John captured his second Crown 21-13.
The Men’s Pairs Final was a thrilling and exiting game between Tom Dickens and Stephen Bain and father and son, James and Brian Henty. With 19 ends completed Tom and Stephen led 16-12. Then on the penultimate end the Henty’s scored four super shots to level the game 16 all. The all-important final shot went to Tom and Stephen who won by the narrowest margin 17-16.
The Men’s Triples Final was between Tom Dickens, Jim Preston (sub) and John Pannett. who played David Bain, Bill Fuller and Stephen Bain. John’s side led 11-8 after 10 ends. With John in top form he led his team to a fine 19-9 win.
There was an amazing score line when the Men’s Fours was played between eight of the clubs top bowlers. Peter Reynolds, John Eriera, Terry Howard and Derek Dyer had a runaway win against Tom Dickens, Dave Bain, Bill Fuller and Stephen Bain. Leading 14-2 after 10 ends Derek’s team went on to win when Stephen’s side conceded the game 26-6.
In the Over 65’s Pairs Ray Novis and Ian Coombes showed all their experience when they played Dave Webber and Tony Huggett. Dave and Tony had bagged some good Scalps on the way to the final. Ian and Ray were always ahead leading 15-3 after 10 ends they went on to record a fine win 23-7.
There was yet another cliff hanger when the Mixed Pairs was played between David and Pat Bain and Maureen Stanbridge and Ian Coombes. Maureen and Ian played steadily to lead 10-7 after ten ends and 15-11 after 15 ends. with both sides scoring one shot on the next two ends Dave and Pat put in a strong finish to win the game 18-16.
The wife and family of the late club member and former County President Bill Winslade have donated a Trophy in his memory to be played for as the Men’s Novices Singles.
Bill was always interested in the games’ development. Ted Seagers and Doug Rodderick gave the watching family an exiting game to watch as the game see-sawed to and fro. With the scores level at 13 all after 15 ends, it was Ted who finished the stronger going on to win 21-14.
