Eastbourne II 178,

Three Bridges 156-8

In a close-fought game against Three Bridges at the Saffrons, Eastbourne second XI just fell short of being able to secure a victory, but in truth it was a game that could have gone either way.

The home side were put in to bat by Three Bridges, and 14-year-old Ted Smith opened the batting for the first time for Eastbourne second XI.

However, the visitors featured a couple of first-team bowlers in their attack and soon Eastbourne found themselves 40 for four.

Chris Borsoi and Richard Smith then batted well together to stabilise things, with Borsoi going on to make a fine 72 in challenging circumstances.

The Three Bridges opening bowlers returned to clean up the tail, and Eastbourne were bowled out for 178.

Eastbourne continued to put faith in their youngsters, as 15-year-old Harry McLeod opened the bowling and did a good job.

Richard Smith came on at first change, and after bowling a few overs of seam switched to off-spin, which proved highly effective in the circumstances.

Bowling in tandem with slow left-armer Joe Barnett, they put the brakes on the Three Bridges innings, and began to pick up regular wickets.

Smith ended up taking five for 51, while Barnett bowled well without much luck. There were a few dropped chances that might have swung things decisively in favour of Eastbourne, but in the end Three Bridges held out for a draw, finishing on 156 for eight.

Skipper Darren Cumming said, “In the end, it was a fair result – both sides had a chance to win, but neither side did quite enough to secure the victory.”
