Boro chase duo but warn of cutbacks

Eastbourne Borough insist it is 'business as usual' despite the collapse of TV firm Setanta this week, as they close in on two new signings.

Chairman Len Smith warned cuts would have to be made at the club to fill a 70,000 black hole in the budget following the Irish broadcaster's demise.

But he has still made funds available to manager Garry Wilson and assistant Nick Greenwood as they look to further bolster their squad.

Greenwood revealed the club were in talks with a striker and a wide player.

He said, "It's been ongoing for a few weeks now. It's up to the players to decide what they want to do.

"Obviously Len is concerned about the finances but he's backed us to try and get these two players.

"As far as we're concerned it's business as usual until we know the full implications of the Setanta situation."

Setanta went into administration this week after defaulting on its sports rights payments.

Last season, Boro' received 78,000 from Setanta as part of the Conference's TV deal and Smith admitted the club had budgeted for a similar amount this season.

He said, "It's a lot of money that we've got to try and replace. We will have to cut down on our expenditure in all areas – that could be cutting back on the playing staff, improvements to the ground, what we spend on away travel.

"We already run a fairly tight ship. We will have to consider what areas we will need to cut back."

Setanta was just two years into a five-year deal with the Conference and paid out 70,000 to each Blue Square Premier club, as well as up to 8,000 for televised games.

Its channels stopped broadcasting on Tuesday, shortly after the firm went into administration.

The Football Conference said it was 'deeply saddened' by the news of Setanta's demise. In a statement, it said it was trying to find another TV firm to broadcast its matches.
