AFTER their welcome win against Roffey, Eastbourne Cricket Club face one of their toughest tests of the season at title-chasing Hastings tomorrow (Saturday).
It will be a true test of Eastbourne’s young guns who did so well to achieve the club’s first league triumph since May 21.
“Last week’s win has given us a big boost,” said skipper Mark Tomsett. “And to see them go from 90-0 to 145 all out was the most pleasing aspect of all.
“It was fantastic to watch two 16-year-olds, Dan Wells (59) and Callum Jackson knocking off valuable runs. You also have to realise that I was the oldest player in the side at 24 – and no fewer than eight of our team were home grown and had progressed through the junior system.
“It certainly bodes well for the future and it’s really exciting.”
Coincidentally, Eastbourne’s first win for nearly three months came on a day when tomorrow’s pace-setters were suffering only their second defeat of the season at the hands of Preston Nomads.
Tomsett accepts that it will be a tough test. “We will need to be right on our game from all aspects and be able to combat anything they throw at us.
“We really want a good performance all round. We know they want that title and will be anxious to get back to winning ways. It should be a great game.
“We are fierce rivals on the pitch but we all get on well off it,” he said.
Coach Alan Wells returns to the Eastbourne line-up in place of Ollie Rayner who this week has been on County Championship duty against Somerset at Taunton.
Rayner took 3-11 against Roffey last week and his inclusion was a big bonus for the Eastbourne team.
“We were able to include him as he wasn’t in the Sussex one-day side and that baffled us,” said Tomsett.
“I cannot speak too highly of Ollie. He is Eastbourne through and through and his atitude is superb.
“He is a credit to the club and himself. We are always delighted to have in the team, although we wish him all the best in his career with Sussex. We believe he deserves a regular place in the Sussex side.”
Eastbourne entertain the Sussex Development XI on Sunday.
