Town share points with Sussex rivals
Eastbourne Town and Sussex rivals Worthing shared the points in an incident-packed but ill-tempered 2-2 draw at the Saffrons on Easter Monday.
While Town had the bonus of an early lead, they needed an 85th minute goal by Mark Goodwin to make it a four-point Easter after their 2-1 triumph at Corinthian Casuals on Saturday.
It was the lively Goodwin who gave Town the lead after five minutes. Stuart Axten miskicked as he attempted to clear Luke Denton's ball down the right and Goodwin's angled chip easily beat keeper Rikki Banks.
Greg Nessling did well to keep out Jamie Brotherton's close range header as Worthing hit back.
Tempers flared in the 23rd minute when Dominic Douglas looked fortunate to escape with a yellow card after a challenge which left Liam Baitup hobbling off and needing treatment on a nasty gash on the shin.
Furious Town boss Ady Colwell confronted Brighton referee Mr A. Slaughter as Baitup finally returned to the action.
The game certainly came to life after this but too much time was wasted as players continually argued with the ref as a number of two-footed tackles went unpunished.
Worthing got back on terms in the 35th minute and this time Ben Putland was at fault in the Town defence. He was robbed by Jerahl Hughes whose cross from the right left Jamie Brotherton with time to pick his spot.
Worthing took command after this and Ben Andrews was out of luck with a fine header that crashed against the bar from Ben Johnson's cross.
Both Adam Davidson and Danny Simmonds tested the the keeper in the early stages of the second half, but again it was Worthing who threatened most with Hughes on the right and Brotherton causing the Borough defence problems.
Peter Cooper and Simon Catt replaced Baitup and Simmonds, but although Catt was soon making his presence felt it was Worthing who went ahead in the 68th minute as Brotherton's downward header from Johnson's cross found the corner of the net.
Town were convinced they had equalised when Banks appeared to drop Goodwin's corner over the line, but a foul on the keeper was given against Davidson.
With just five minutes remaining, however, Town took another step towards Ryman League division one South safety when a tremendous run on the left by Catt ended with Goodwin providing a simple finish.
Town assistant boss Derrick Smith said, "I thought we got the point we deserved. The guys battled well and showed their character."
TOWN: Nessling, Aldridge (Dallaway), Manton, Denton, Putland. Featherstone, Simmonds (Catt), Davidson, Baitup (Cooper), Piercy, Goodwin.
