MAY 8, 2008 will go down as a red letter day for Eastbourne Borough – the day when they secured promotion to the Blue Square Premier and proudly took their place at the top of the non-league ladder.
It has been a long journey from humble beginnings as Langney Sports through three divisions of the County League.
When Boro gained promotion from the County League at the turn of the Millennium, one player was there and is still there – playing as well as ever.
Defenders played a huge part in the club's triumph and for Darren Baker it was his 775th game for the club.
Baker told Herald Sport, "It's a dream come true for me. I can actually say I have come from County League to Conference.
"Each step up is another challenge and luckily I've managed to stay involved each time. To come this far is just incredible.
"I have seen many triumphs with Langney and Boro but nothing quite like this. The prize for winning is so huge.
"It was a poor game, but an exciting one and it was such a relief when that first goal went in. We didn't realise what a brilliant turn and strike it was from Andy Atkin that hit the bar until we saw the replay on TV.
"When the second goal went in it was like the final whistle at a cup final."
Said fellow defender Ben Austin, who went on an amazing 60-yard right flank run during the game and ended up flat on his back with exhaustion,"It hasn't really sunk in yet to be honest, it's unbelievable how far we've all come.
"It's what we wanted and worked for all season. There's a few of us who need to look at what's going to happen next season, with our work life and personal life. But every player here will want to give it a go. At my age you've got to want to play at the highest level you can, just to say you've done it."
Skipper Paul Armstrong, who won the Dr Martens Premier Division title with Crawley, said, "It feels better to go up through the play-offs than it does winning the title, because you get a fantastic night like this. We didn't play that well but we deserve it over the course of the season."
Matt Crabb also accepted that Boro had not played that well. "We know we could have played better and we played into their hands at times. But we battled through and we never give up. We have proved we can play for 90 minutes."
Of his brother Nathan's feat in netting the deadlock-breaking goal, he said, "I loved it and he deserved it. It's his first season with us and to step up from the County League like he has done is absolutely superb."
