The idea was discussed last week by the community services committee of Seaford Town Council.
The barn, which is situated off Chyngton Way and has a car park next to it used by visitors to Seaford Head and the Cuckmere estuary, has been empty for
several years.
It was thought to have been last used by a farmer who used it to store his equipment.
Councillor Chris Conil said, "I personally feel it has a great potential and it's sitting there on our doorstep.
"Because it has been abandoned the pigeons have taken it over.
"It would open itself up to wonderful opportunities for all sorts of ideas."
He added that it could become an eco-centre which could use solar panels and that residents he had spoken to had said the building would be well used as tea rooms.
Councillor Eddie Collict said the fact the building had been unused for such a long time was a 'terrible waste' and added, "The longer it is left unoccupied the more damage there will be to its long-term future."
Other comments made by members of the committee included fears that it could be used as a housing scheme if it was left and Councillor Paul Bower said more information was needed regarding any restrictions regarding the site such as vehicular access.
Members agreed to seek further ideas from people in relation to the future of the venue and decided to obtain the services of a chartered surveyor to put together an information pack on the land.
