THE SEAFORD and Newhaven lifeboat weekend raised more than £7,500 — including collections on Seaford seafront when spectators watched the Newhaven and Le Havre lifeboats in a simulated rescue display.
The efforts of the Seaford town crier, Peter White, who announced details of the weekend including the largest fete yet on the West Quay at Newhaven, attracted many to that event and to the lifeboat display the next day.

Lifeboat fundraisers in the two towns are now preparing their next major effort, Newhaven flag week, which runs from August 18 to August 23.

Flag week and the lifeboat weekend are the largest of more than a dozen fundraising events each year.

A few more helpers for flag week are needed and anyone who can spare a couple of hours to collect at static points in the town or make house-to-house collections will be warmly welcomed.

They should contact the acting chairman of the group, Derek Payne at payne64@btinternet.com or telephone him on 01273 514 841.

The crew of Newhaven lifeboat have responded to calls for help five times so far this month. Since the start of the year they have received 29 'shouts' involving the rescue of nearly 30 people.
