COUNCIL chiefs are penning a letter to Southern Water following the continued problem of flooding at fields in Seaford.
The matter was brought before the planning and highways committee of Seaford Town Council by Seaford resident Bob Gower at a meeting last week.

He told members that the Martello Fields near the seafront had flooded yet again at the beginning of th
e month which resulted in raw sewage being left in the vicinity. And this weekend also saw heavy rainfall cause the area to flood.

Organisers of the Seaford Carnival this year had to re-arrange their plans after they found one of the fields flooded on the morning of the event.

And many homeowners have warned that further development in the area will only add to problems.

In June David Boots, chairman of the Residents' Association of Seaford Head (RASH), said the situation had got worse every year.

He added on one occasion a manhole cover came off which could have resulted in a small child falling into the sewer.

At Thursday's meeting Mr Gower asked the committee if they were aware of the situation.

Members agreed that the town council should write to Southern Water about the issue.

Referring to the latest incident a spokeswoman for Southern Water said, "Our Cliff End pumping station in Seaford, was overwhelmed by the intense rainfall experienced on Monday causing a manhole in the nearby playing field to overflow. A clean-up in the area was carried out on Monday afternoon. We are aware this has happened on previous occasions and we are investigating to see where and if improvements to the system can be made.

"We ask customers to call our technical call centre on 0845 278 0845 to report incidents such as this."
