Call for a crossing on danger road

A CONTROLLED pedestrian crossing is urgently needed on a 'dangerous stretch' of road in Seaford.
That is the warning from two town councillors who fear that someone could lose their life trying to cross Steyne Road.
Councillors Bob Brown and Bob Allen say improvements on the road, close to where it meets Saxon Lane, are needed.
They spoke following a recent incident in the area when an elderly man was knocked down by a car, badly injuring his arm. And around five years ago a pedestrian was knocked down and killed when crossing the road.
Cllr Brown said schoolchildren and particularly residents living in the sheltered housing facility French's Court (opposite Saxon Lane) – a number of whom are wheelchair users – were at risk and he believes a road island is also needed to solve the problem.
He said, "I feel we should be doing something now before there is another fatality.
"There are some dropped kerbs here and I wouldn't think some sort of crossing would be that expensive."
"There is a crossing opposite the college, as there should be, but the road needs a controlled crossing between the school and the end of Steyne Road."
Cllr Brown said there were also dangers with motorists speeding down Steyne Road and that many pulled sharply off the road into College Road. He added that Saxon Lane needed improvements because the pavement was not wide enough for wheelchair users.
Elizabeth Price-Simmons, who is partially-sighted and lives in French's Court, said, "I have been living here for around four years and the traffic has at least doubled in that time.
"It is difficult when crossing the road to look everywhere and see behind you and people break the speed limit continuously.
"The other problem is that when I came down Saxon Lane once towards Steyne Road a lorry cut the corner and was very close to me.
"There should be a zebra crossing or pedestrian controlled crossing of some sort."
A spokeswoman for East Sussex County Council said, "If residents are concerned about crossing at this part of the road we would be happy to speak to them about the possibility of a pedestrian crossing.
"We would then make an assessment in the normal way to see if this was a suitable solution."
Anyone who has any comments or concerns is asked to speak to the traffic and safety group at County Hall, Lewes, on 01273 481000.
