EMPLOYEES from the Parker Pen factory in Newhaven were joined by Geoffrey Parker, great-grandson of the company's founder, to celebrate the brand's 120th anniversary.
Production at the factory, which is Parker's longest operating site in its 120 year history, was halted from 12noon to 4pm last Tuesday as staff enjoyed a hog roast and viewed an exhibition of the company's heritage, as a string quartet played.
In a symbolic act, Geoffrey Parker planted an oak tree in recognition of his great-grandfather's love of trees.
A time capsule, containing commemorative items including the current Parker product range, was buried outside the company's reception entrance, with a plaque noting that it should be re-opened on Parker's 200th anniversary in 2088.
Mr Parker addressed the Newhaven staff, before cutting a birthday cake for the brand made in the shape of a Duofold, the most famous Parker pen.
In 1888, George S Parker, a teacher of telegraphy in Wisconsin, USA, when, fed up of fixing his pupils' pens, decided to invent his own version of the fountain pen. His belief was simple — 'Make something better and people will buy it.' With that, the Parker pen company was born.
The production of Parker pens in Newhaven began in the early 1940s when the Valentine Pen Company began the assembly of parts from the USA shipped via its Canadian subsidiary. In 1945 the USA company purchased the business and continuous production has been in place since that time.
In February 1986, corporate headquarters were moved to Newhaven after Parker's UK management team succeeded in a buyout of the writing instruments division. Despite a world recession, Parker doubled its turnover in the seven years following the management buyout, proving the effectiveness of the company's regional management.
In 1993, the Gillette Company acquired the worldwide business and the headquarters transferred to Boston MA and eight years later the Parker brand joined the Sanford stable of writing instrument brands and remains part of the Newell Rubbermaid company today.
n To celebrate the 120th anniversary, Parker has launched the limited edition Duofold Lucky 8 pen.
