A reporter's role is never dull

ON Sunday I had the eye opening experience of spending an hour with Eastbourne's Naturist Swim Club.
A reporters life is varied and in between seeing the devastation caused by a house fire, covering court stories and the troubles of the former Towner Gallery, I interviewed and made a three minute video about the local club, which has been thriving in Eastbourne for the past 25 years.

As a reporter, it can be difficult to get people to be prepared to have their name included in an article, let alone get them to agree to be photographed or filmed. Not so the lovely group of people I met at the swimming pool on Sunday.

The majority of the members were happy to talk and share their mantra that 'nothing's better'. Most had first come across naturism when on holiday and were delighted to discover that they could bare all and dip their toes in to the waters on a weekly basis at home in Eastbourne .

They invited me to dive in and join them. If I were covering the opening of a new beauty salon and they offered me a pamper session, I'd no doubt try it; if I were offered a piece of cake by a WI group, I'd be sure to take it as it would be rude not to. But getting nude? Could I really write an article without experiencing it? Surely I could.

I'd not taken a towel and the hour swim slot was almost up by the time I'd got the video footage I needed so, apart from slightly soggy feet, I stayed dry and fully clothed throughout.

I'm guessing that although I didn't find the time to swim with the families and couples who go to the naturist club, I suspect I'll be the first in line to try the dry ski slope that is coming to Eastbourne for the St Wilfrid's Christmas Magic Weekend (see tomorrow's Herald for details).

The article on the naturist club and the video will be online soon.....

What a pity you didn't take the plunge Sarah. Lots of people feel a reluctance the first time, just as you describe, but once they've tried it the most common reaction is "This is great, why didn't I do this before?"

The problem is a [quite harmful] prudish hang-over from the Victorian era.

Another time perhaps...
