Pupils from Hankham School helped to plant out their winning carpet garden design for the annual In Bloom competition.
The youngsters took the Dotto train along the seafront to Holywell for the event.

They met up with the Mayor, Cllr Mary Pooley, and representatives from Eastbourne Borough Council as part of the Environment In-Bloom initiative organised by Eastbourne Education Business Partnership in conjunction with The Weather Shop, Gardening Matters and Glendale Grounds Management.

The school won the annual In Bloom competition for Eastbourne primary schools in March.

This is the 13th In Bloom design created by local primary schools.

Mike Round, head teacher of Hankham Primary School, said, "We are delighted to have won the competition for the last three years we entered it.

"It was exciting for the children to meet the designers at the planting and work with them for the day.

"I'd like to thank Simon Hurt from Eastbourne in Bloom, Tim Sorensen from the Eastbourne Education Business Partnership and cllr Mary Pooley, for all making us feel so welcome."

The initiative contributes to school curriculum work by putting learning into context and developing links beyond the classroom.

"Everyone from Eastbourne Parks and Gardens and Eastbourne in Bloom, is very pleased with this colourful and topical contribution to the annual seafront displays," said a spokesperson.

"Hankham's winning design (they also won in 2003 and 2004) will be seen by hundreds of visitors and residents over the summer months."
