THANK God common sense has prevailed.
The news the NHS review panel has ruled that consultant led maternity services should be provided at both the Eastbourne and Hastings hospitals is fantastic.

In a world where one feels the faceless cost-cutters in suits rule our lives, it is doubly refreshing to see that people power does work.

Even though the facts spoke for themselves, the dedication and nerve shown by the Save The DGH campaigners is incredible.

It takes a tremendous amount of courage to take on a two-year battle to make the people in suits see sense, that the risk of cutting down a maternity unit in a fast-growing town just isn't going to work.

I felt a long time ago that the controversy surrounding the A259 - the route an ambulance would have to negotiate if a woman in labour's delivery started to get complicated - would swing the case in the campaigners' favour.

It's a well-known fact that road is narrow, congested and in the wrong conditions, downright dangerous.

The town's GPs pointed out ages ago that situation would easily break the 30-minute rule that gives the maximum time from a decision to give a mum-to-be an emergency Caesarian to when she's actually in the operating theatre.

It was clear from the start the situation was a no-brainer and the £400,000 bill to go through all that consultation over the proposed cuts just seems a waste.

What could that money have been spent on? Employing more medical staff? Providing expensive equipment such as MRI scanners? Paying for people to have those scans?

I could go on and on - hospitals always need money to treat and care for people.

But seriously, well done all the Save the DGH campaigners. Eastbourne is proud of you.
