Air show charges have been poorly thought out

Charging £5 per head on a long section of the seafront for this year's Airbourne was always going to raise the hackles of the people of Eastbourne.
We've had a flood of letters from people who are understandably frustrated that what would have been a free day out, especially in a world where the price of everything is steadily rising, could cost at least £20 for a family of four.

Personally, I've no problem with a smaller charge for people wanting to visit the static display on the Western Lawns, but charging so much for entry to what is a public beach and right of way seems a bit extreme.

Judging by the mail we've received (both postal and electronic), and the comments we've had on our website, the plan seems to be riddled with problems.

A number of public toilets are included in the paid-for zone – so what happens if you're not there for the planes and you need to go? A fiver to spend a penny?

Readers who rent beach huts have written in questioning why they should fork out for themselves – and family and friends – to use a facility for which they have already paid.

And there are also concerns for trade – the Wish Tower Restaurant is in the paid-for zone and people have pointed out that the stallholders who line the seafront might make less this year and be disinclined to come back in 2009.

It just goes to show that the plan to charge was rushed through without the council giving the ramifications much thought. Teething problems in any new idea are bound to happen, but more could have been done to prevent them in this case.

Local people are bound to flock to the 'free' parts of the beach to watch the displays (I know I probably would), with the greater percentage of people paying being tourists who have come down for a day.

A few years ago, my neighbours and I needed some works done on the roof of our flats in the town centre. We had scaffolding up for months before the roofers came – and they finished the job while Airbourne was on.

This just goes to show there are several creative ways to avoid paying – and most of those who know this area and want to see the air show will do just that.

Im not going to pay to stand on my own seafront. I think this has been a very shortsighted course of action. Rather than raise money ultimately it will have the opposite effect as so many people just wont come anymore. The four day weekend must bring in so much trade to local traders, restaurants and hotels and this will drop. Many families plan their holiday to include these four days. For a family of four that adds £80 to their visit! I wonder how many people will arrive from other parts of the country unaware of the charge till its too late. It will just give families another reason to consider a holiday abroad instead of spending their hard earnes money in their own country. It already seems in many ways cheaper to holiday abroad.I also think its a shame for residents as I personally look forward to this event every year but I will now not attend.

No, no, no, no. This is getting annoying now. A lot of people disagree with any sort of charge and that's fair enough. If you don't agree then speak out but please, for goodness sake, understand what you are commenting on.

Everyone will you please get it into your head that Airbourne is FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE.

CindyE tells us that a family of four visiting the event for four days will have to pay £80. Rubbish - absolute tosh! They will pay exactly nothing to visit Airbourne as they will have been able to since the event was first created. If that family of four wish to enter the premium viewing area then they will need to pay. Please CindyE, understand that there is a distinct difference. It's really not that hard!!

Local people are not stupid. Local people all know exactly where to head to see the event free, and there are plenty of places along our lengthy seafront. Those that wish to have the best view are being asked to pay for it and that is all. As for tourists - the same applies to them.

Its a no win situation for the Council really. People complain about having the event and how much it must cost the town, then complain when the Council tries to make it pay it's way. Sadly the constant complainers out there (and in that I include the rather ridiculous groups of nutters on a certain social networking site) are completely clueless as to what they really want!

Further to my remarks last week, the trouble the Council are heading for will not go away. You don't have to pay and I hope people won't and then we will see the losses the Council makes. Remember they are spending our money, it's not theirs.
