A Langney resident is calling for a referendum on the controversial pay to park scheme.
John Porter has written to the leader of East Sussex County Council Peter Jones calling for an immediate referendum asking the people of Eastbourne if they support the pay to park scheme.

"We the people of Eastbourne have expressly made it clear over the last two years that we do not want the pay to park scheme enforced upon our town," said Mr Porter.

"As the proposed parking scheme directly affects the local people and surrounding areas, we feel in the spirit of fairness and natural justice, it is only right for Eastbourne to vote on the entire pay to park scheme."

Mr Porter said the Conservative leader should listen to the people of Eastbourne.

He added, "Seaford, Rother and Bexhill all rejected the scheme and East Sussex County Council relented.

"Democracy, fairness and justice must prevail.

"Hence our call for a referendum in a bid to bring all concerned powers to their senses and dump this arrogantly concocted scheme, to empty the pockets of Eastbourne people into the coffers of the NCP and the county council, once and for all into the bin where it should have gone from day one of its conception."

A county council spokesman said, "We have already conducted a detailed consultation with those who will be affected by the controlled parking zone and new enforcement arrangements.

"This included public meetings, surgeries and letters to all those residents and businesses and has given people numerous occasions to make their views known.

"Furthermore, we have acted on those views and changed our original proposals to meet their concerns. So there is no need for a referendum."

ESCC consulted only those people living or running a business in the controlled parking zones - this scheme will affect EVERY EASTBOURNE RESIDENT - we should all have a say.

l think this is disgraceful, we already pay road tax , l have to work in the town and l cannot afford to pay these charges and there are a lot of other workers in the same boat, , Matthew Lock said in last weeks paper, that business might pay for the permits for there staff to park, my employer will certainly not pay for the permits for us to park . lt is a backdoor tax nothing else, it won't stop congestion people we will still use there cars, some people like me don't have a choice l have to use our car to get to work especially when l start at 4.30am in the mornings, there is no public transport at this time of the morning, not only that the public transport is so unreliable. If the council stopped wasting our money and spend it carefully they would have enough. What about in last weeks hearld the council losing money on this regeneration scheme of the town centre and now they have to find another company to take over, and they will want more money to pay for it again ,typical council blunder, but they don't care it is not there money. The council always do what they want, they take no notice of the public even when they have there say.
