Which shops raise and lower the tone?

Your correspondent, Bill Robertson, writing in last week’s Herald is quite correct in his observation that the presence of a Pound shop lowers the tone of the locality.

I, for one, do my utmost to maintain standards in my own prestigious neighbourhood by ensuring online deliveries by Tesco are carried out under cover of darkness.

On the other hand, the daytime arrival of the Harrods van is more than welcome.

Some years back, writing in my much acclaimed column in the Eastbourne Gazette, I always strove to set standards for others to aspire to.
