Smug and sanctimonious

Your ‘Out In the Field’ (“Time for Diocese to answer questions”, May 24) about no one in the church hierarchy being held to account for their lack of action or condemnation, during a period of almost forty years, over the disgraceful activities of jailed priest Gordon Rideout, is a plea destined to fall on deaf ears.

The sanctimonious comments and smug, hypocritical hand-wringing of those who hold, or have held, high positions in the church, reported elsewhere in the same edition, bear shameful witness to this. “Held to account?”

This is, I fear, as likely as a winged pig flying over the pier at this year’s Airbourne.

ROGER PAINE,

Church Path,

Hellingly.
