NOT too long ago it was common to see groups of young people sitting on grass verges, chatting happily and laughing in the sunshine.
Today I passed such a group while walking my dog. Four young girls, aged maybe 13/14, were sitting in a huddle on the grass.
There was no happy chatter however, nor any girlish laughter.
They sat in complete silence, each one busily texting who knows whom on her mobile phone.
They might even have been talking to each other via this modern means of communication for all I knew.
Nevertheless, I felt that they were missing out on something; or maybe I’m just an old Luddite.
Oh, and yes, I do have a mobile phone. I use it to make phone calls.
