It has been a momentous week for Organ Donation with the Welsh Assembly deciding on an “Opt in” policy.
Anyone who does not wish to give their organs can “Opt out”. It will be interesting to see how this works out. This is not likely to happen in the short term in the rest of the United Kingdom and we are still in need of more donors.
Sadly in excess of 8,000 people are on the transplant list waiting for organs and three die every day whilst they are waiting. During Transplant Week there will be displays in the foyers at both Eastbourne and Hastings Hospitals and there will be an ample supply of forms available to get you on to the Organ Donor Register.
In a recent survey 90% of people said they would take an organ if they needed one but we only have just over 30% on the register in our area. This is vital to our success as being on the register enhances our chances of obtaining donors – particularly if they have told their nearest and dearest that they have joined. The theme of our campaign is “pass it on”.
