I ENJOYED the great piece about the judicial system in Annemarie Field’s Out in the Field column.
Wouldn’t it be a great idea if a number of different criminal scenarios were described and the general public asked what they think the sentence should be by way of a referendum?
That way at least we could say justice was seen to be done!
I would like to see a debate on the purpose of the justice system.
I don’t see how some crimes can be compensated but it disturbs me to see people walking away from serious crimes with families not feeling justice has been done especially when things could be minimised - knife crime, drinking and driving etc where a deterrent doesn’t seem to exist!
It appears to me that if we applied risk assessment to crime we could reduce it!
