Parking charges are foolhardy

I would like to make your readers aware of the huge parking restrictions being imposed by East Sussex County Council on Eastbourne residents.

Many more double yellow lines are to be introduced throughout Eastbourne.

For instance my own small road (New Road) is to have double yellows the whole length of one side of the road.

This will leave over 25 houses with about 30 vehicles competing for 13 or 14 spaces on the other side of the road.

With further parking restrictions being imposed in surrounding roads some residents will be forced to park a long way from their homes.

Some female residents, in jobs such as nursing, will now be forced to walk a long distance home both late at night and in the early hours of the morning.

These measures will either be an inconvenience to local residents or a money-making exercise, especially to the elderly who may now face a long walk home with heavy bags of shopping.

More importantly, given the recent attacks on women in Eastbourne, these parking restriction proposals made by East Sussex County Council seem to be a foolhardy measure in extreme.

Also these restrictions will affect the local economy as shoppers will no longer be able to park near their local independent shops, thus forcing them to out of town supermarkets or to other towns with less draconian parking regimes.

Objections should be made to philip.baker@eastsussex.gov.uk by October 21.
