THE letter in the Gazette of September 7 (‘Elected police are not a fair cop’) from Councillor MacCleary, Liberal Democrat group leader on Lewes District Council, makes me wonder where he is leading his followers.
He claims to want a ‘clear separation between politicians and the police’. At the national level, it is our government who are responsible for our police forces and our government which needs to intervene when required.
At the local level, Sussex Police Authority currently has responsibility for Sussex Police. The Authority has 17 members, a majority of whom – by law – have to be elected.
Five of the elected members claim to be Conservative, two Liberal Democrat, one Labour, and one Green.
Does Councillor MacCleary want these politicians to stop interfering?
