MANY of us will respond in our own ways to the new memorial to Bomber Command above Eastbourne.
Movingly, it reminds us that Beachy Head was the last sight of England for many of the bomber crews as they set out for a continent in darkness.
The monument is within easy walking distance from a simple Peace Memorial set up by Eastbourne for Peace and Liberty and Eastbourne United Nations Association which commemorates all who lost their lives in the wars of the last 100 years, whatever their gender, age or nationality, military or civilian.
A visit to windswept Beachy Head would be an opportunity for thoughtful comparison of both memorials. A necessary complementarity perhaps?
