LETTER: Will Tory gain be town’s loss?

We retired to Eastbourne in 2009. Having spent all my life in safe-Labour or safe-Conservative seats, I was fascinated at the 2010 Election to find myself in a ‘marginal’.

Stephen Lloyd (Liberal Democrat) took the seat from the Tories, and has been our MP for the past five years.

‘The Independent’ national newspaper, writing about our parliamentary democracy, described Stephen’s work as an MP as “as good as it gets”. My experience confirms this; in 70 years, I have never met a more industrious, approachable and affable Member of Parliament. He cares passionately about our town. His election slogan: “Everyone knows someone helped by Stephen” rings true. And now he is gone.

I heard Caroline Ansell at the hustings at Kings Church two weeks ago. Caroline, a schools inspector, publicly defended Conservative policy of allowing the employment of unqualified teachers in free schools! What next? – hospital consultants approving unqualified doctors?!

I fear the election result: Conservative ‘gain’… will prove to be Eastbourne’s loss.
