LETTER: Where graffiti is welcomed

Have your say

What is it with Eastbourne Borough Council and paint? Do they have a huge surplus of it? Not content to splash the stuff all over the roads – then in one infamous case of having to burn it off again – they have come up with another dumb idea.

A few weeks ago I noticed two painters daubing over the graffiti at the skateboard park next to the Sovereign Centre and thought, “What a waste of time and money.”

It was obvious that their efforts, which, by the way, left the structure looking dowdy and unattractive, would be in vain, and ere long urban artists would return. So it has proved. New painted legends and slogans have appeared, the best of which is, “How you gonna have a skatepark with no graffiti?”

Succinctly put. The skatepark was built for young people to enjoy themselves in their own way. They actually LIKE graffiti and other artwork painted on it. It’s a universal phenomenon, for goodness sake. Let them get on with it – and, please council, lock away the remainder of your paint tins.
