In 1832, after much wrangling in parliament and rioting, the great Reform Act was passed. The government was afraid there would be a revolution. But this didn’t give everyone the vote, most of the working class were cut out. How hard the Suffragettes had to fight to get the vote for women, achieved only in 1928.
Do we need another Reform Act to give people a fairer chance to be represented in parliament by having proportional representation? There are several kinds, not just the alternative vote (AV) we were offered last time. This was rejected.
Unfortunately, why would the Tory party agree to this change when they do so well under the present system? Is this democracy? This is wanted by the Green party, the SNP, Plaid Cymru and UKIP. Added together that makes at lot of demand, plus all those who felt unrepresented in the General Election.
