LETTER: There’s safety in numbers

Have your say

Referring to the letter by Bryan Wallis [Herald, April 22] about voting for the Police and Crime Commissioner’s position, I have strong feelings for his comments, even though, put as they were in humorous vein.

Why have we had an American-style system, with its known propensity for abuse and corruption, foisted upon us? It is supposed to give democratic control over policing priorities. Instead that control is in the hands of one person, already proven to be a fallible nonsense in this country.

We used to have a committee of people (safety in numbers) which should have been sufficiently empowered to exercise that control. It was not. Now we have that one person situation with its possibility for abuse.

Our household, too, will have at least one spoilt ballot paper in protest.
