LETTER: Slot machines lost in blaze

Why do people like Messrs Hillman and Ellis of Hailsham continue to criticise Sheikh Abid Gulzar? The pier was in a very poor state of repair, and at least the Sheikh has started to improve it. As for saying ‘did he need to bless the pier?’ I don’t think the Sheikh even said it was a necessity, he just thought it would be a nice gesture. And saying the pier is a monument to Mammon with its gambling machines – I think most of these were lost in the fire! The pier is part of Eastbourne and its tourist industry, and long may it remain so.
