LETTER: Railway bosses need to tackle the toilets first

On Friday 29 August two friends travelled to Eastbourne from Victoria for the day. They arrived mid-morning at 11.15. There had been no lavatories available on the train and when they got here the station Gents was closed ‘for cleaning purposes’ so stated the notice on the door. That notice was still on the locked door the following morning. The state of the loo must have been gleaming at every point upon reopening. One of my friends, desperate on arrival, spoke to an attendant who let him have the key to the toilet for the disabled.

While it is laudable to encourage such a comparative luxury as a fast train to Victoria, it might be more relevant to bring the basics – and one could not have anything more basic than lavatorial facilities – up to a satisfactory state first.
