LETTER: Radiotherapy – lives being lost

We were advised last week that the radiotherapy build at Eastbourne DGH had been stopped. At a meeting on November 5 we had been assured the unit would open in April 2016 and that six-day working was taking place. Under pressure, the Trusts and the Government are promising that work will recommence in the New Year. They do not specify whether the New Year is January 1 or, as I suspect, the new financial year starting April 6, 2016, and we have no guarantees on either date.

Eastbourne and East Sussex residents continue to rely on outdated machines at Brighton that are well past their sell by date and break down continuously. Lives have been lost and will continue to be lost as many patients cannot face or cannot arrange transport to Brighton on a daily basis for six weeks and therefore refuse treatment.

We have been fighting for this facility for Eastbourne for many years. How can our local MPs and Trust Chief Executives let this happen?
