LETTER: Poor record on assurances

As witnessed by previous letters, there exists in Eastbourne a ground swell of unease about the council's proposals particularly the apparent reassurances concerning the long-term covenant protections.

From past records/experience the council has a very poor reputation as to the reliability of their reassurances. A prime example being the Sovereign Harbour Development, whereby the council originally gave assurances the developers would not build properties higher than five storeys, they would not build more than 2,500 homes and they would ensure there would be good recreational space. All of these reassurances have been overturned!

As a consequence we cannot trust nor believe the council can or will uphold in perpetuity the range of reassurances they have currently proposed. Also there is no indication that the farmers will have a fair input should the sale proposals proceed.

Should the sale proceed under the present proposals the council will be guilty of blatant mismanagement of Eastbourne’s longer-term interests.
